Shop Before You Buy

The first question you probably have if you aren't an avid rider is what kind of bike do you want? For many riders a mountain bike is a good choice. You can ride it easily because it has a comfortable seating posture and fat tires. You won't go as fast as on a road bike, but you'll be much more comfortable with the ride. Almost every bike store in existence sells several brands of mountain bikes, including both suspension and non suspension types of frames.

If you are interested in riding long distances and want to go fast then a road bike could be just the ticket for you. You will have to get used to the way you ride and are positioned on the bike. Your posture on a road bike is lower with your body stretched forward and your back parallel to the top of the frame. It may not be as comfortable as a mountain bike, but the ride is much faster.

Make sure that you ride several bikes before you make a decision to buy that first bike. Many bikes will cost well over $1000 and higher if you are looking for a more advanced bike. Make sure that you educate yourself before you pay your money. Spending a few hours researching the type, brand, components and size will increase your ultimate enjoyment of your bicycling experience.
